Giving Every Child the Right to Learn Well

Pratham Ahmedabad Education Initiative (PAEI) has worked since 2002 with children, youth, and families across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar to ensure that learning — not just enrolment — actually happens. From Anganwadis in Amraiwadi to classrooms in Gandhinagar, we go where the need is greatest.

Access English Microscholarship

A 2-year English and holistic development program for young people aged 13–25. US Embassy partnership since 2010 across 3 schools in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. 6 cycles completed — reaching nearly 1,000 adolescents across Ahmedabad. Learnings from this program now feed into Pratham Education Foundation's broader English programs nationally.

Learning Enhancement Program

Running since 2016 in Gandhinagar, Sector 8. PAEI works with school children on Language, Mathematics, and Science to close learning gaps early — before they compound. Informed by Pratham's Teaching at the Right Level approach, which has shown "among the largest effect sizes in education research globally" (J-PAL).

Need-based · Ongoing

Second Chance Program

Pratham's Second Chance program supports girls and young women who dropped out of school to complete their Class X board exams through NIOS — paying registration fees and providing ongoing encouragement. PAEI assists about 30 students annually with their NIOS (open school) fee payments. 92% of Pratham's Second Chance students in Gujarat have passed their board exams.

Active · 2025-26

Early Years Program

PAEI's flagship active programme. 215+ children across 21 bastis in Eastern Ahmedabad, with Anganwadi workers, weekly mother groups, and Pratham's team working together. Children show measurable progress in reading, numeracy, and sequential thinking. Mothers have become independent co-educators in their own communities.

Scale the Early Years Program

PAEI aims to deepen its Early Years work — strengthening Anganwadi support, growing mother groups across more bastis, and running a longitudinal study to track how early learning translates to school outcomes over time.

Coming Soon

Revive & Expand Learning Enhancement

PAEI aspires to bring back structured Language, Maths, and Science sessions — building on what the Gandhinagar programme showed was possible, and potentially extending it to more communities in Ahmedabad and beyond.

A Story of Change

One child. Thirty days. A lifetime of reading ahead of her.

Devanshi's mother had tried everything — reading the consonant chart with her every day, over and over. Nothing was working. Then Devanshi joined the 30-day Early Years camp at Nitin Nagar. She worked through word-building, decoding, number recognition — in a group, at her own pace. By the end of the camp, she could read independently. "Devanshi reads different stories very nicely on her own," her mother told us.

About Us

A Citizen's Initiative for Learning

Registered in 2002 as a citizen's initiative, PAEI has spent 24 years proving that the right support, at the right time, changes everything for a child.

Our Story

Pratham initiated its work for education in Ahmedabad at the turn of the millennium — in 1999–2000, when the question that drove India's largest education non-profit had spread to Gujarat: are children in school actually learning?

In 2002, a small group of Ahmedabad citizens turned that question into action — registering Pratham Ahmedabad Education Initiative as a citizen's society dedicated to the quality of primary education. What began with a handful of volunteers in classrooms across the city has grown over twenty-four years into a multi-program organisation. We've supported nearly a thousand adolescents through Access English. Helped 150 girls in Gujarat sit their Class X exams through Second Chance. Built foundational learning programs from Gandhinagar to Eastern Ahmedabad.

Today, our flagship Early Years program reaches 215+ children across 21 bastis in Eastern Ahmedabad — and the mothers in those communities have themselves become co-educators. We focus on the children most likely to be left behind: early-years learners who need a strong foundation, girls who dropped out and deserve a second chance at Class X, and young people for whom English opens real doors.

We are a small team in Ahmedabad with a large belief — that every child here can learn well, if given the chance.

Mission & Values

Quality over Quantity

A child enrolled in school is not necessarily a child who is learning. PAEI measures what matters: can they read? Can they count? Are they improving?

Community Rooted

Our programs work because mothers in Amraiwadi become teachers in their own bastis. The community is not the context — it is the solution.

Evidence-Driven

Every PAEI program is grounded in Pratham's ASER research and TaRL methodology — the most independently validated approach in Indian education.

Inclusive Reach

Dropout girls, anganwadi children, young people with no English — PAEI exists for those who fell through the cracks of a system that should have caught them.

Board of Trustees

PAEI is governed by a Board of Trustees committed to quality education in Ahmedabad.

PAEI is part of something larger.

PAEI has grown from a citizen's initiative into a multi-program organisation running across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. This website is the first step in a larger journey — to reach more children, bring in more partners, and tell the story of what community-led education actually looks like on the ground.

Our Programs

What We Have Done, Are Doing & Plan to Do

Four programs — past, present, and planned — across foundational learning, dropout recovery, English access, and early childhood. One mission: every child in Ahmedabad gets the chance to learn well, regardless of where they were born or what school they dropped out of.

Program Outcomes

🎓 Access English Microscholarship (2011–23)

6 cycles completed since PAEI joined as a partner in 2010, reaching nearly 1,000 adolescents across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. US Embassy partnership. The program went beyond English — exposure visits, hands-on science, and cross-cultural connections gave students opportunities most never get otherwise. Learnings from this program have fed directly into Pratham Education Foundation's national English content and programs.

📚 Second Chance Program

PAEI supports girls and young women who dropped out of school to complete their Class X board exams through Pratham's Second Chance program — covering NIOS registration fees and providing ongoing encouragement. 150 girls in Gujarat have been supported by PAEI through this need-based program. 92% of Pratham's Second Chance students in Gujarat have passed their board exams (2017–18).

🏫 Learning Enhancement Program

Ran since 2016 in Gandhinagar, Sector 8. PAEI worked with school children on Language, Mathematics, and Science to strengthen foundation skills at the right stage. The program is informed by Pratham's Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach — validated across 80+ million children globally and adopted by governments in 17 Indian states.

👶 Early Years Program

215+ children across 21 bastis in Eastern Ahmedabad (2025-26). Anganwadi workers and weekly mother groups deliver structured learning for Class 1 and 2 children. Baseline-to-endline assessments show clear movement from Stage 0–1 to Stage 3–4 across all skills: reading, numeracy, sequential thinking, and recognising emotions. Mothers have become independent co-educators — volunteering in their own bastis and others.

Stories of Change

Every number on this page is a real child, a real family, a real life changed. Here are two of them.

Early Years Program
Devanshi's mother tried everything — reading the consonant chart with her every single day. Still, Devanshi couldn't read. At 7 years old, she could only recognise letters. Her mother was losing hope. Then Devanshi joined the 30-day Early Years camp at Nitin Nagar — working through word-building, decoding, and number recognition in a small group. Within 30 days, she learned to read and count. "Devanshi reads different stories very nicely on her own," her mother told us.
Early Years — Anganwadi Volunteer
Nishaben used to sit quietly at the Anganwadi, watching her daughter's sessions. Shy and reluctant, she told the CIM: "Teacher, I can't do this." But she kept watching. When she saw another volunteer, Divyaben, leading activities with the children, something shifted. She asked to be trained. Today, Nishaben leads Anganwadi sessions herself — singing children's songs, running group activities, and bringing younger volunteers with her to training. Other mothers say: "We never thought Nishaben would speak like this."
